Tamana Coffee: A Journey of Flavors, Memories, and Connections.

Coffee has always been more than a drink to me—it’s a bridge to cherished memories, human connections, and the rhythms of life across the globe. Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, coffee was part of the cultural fabric. “Hong Wing” coffee, boiled with brown cane sugar and no milk, always simmered on the earthen fireside, ready to be shared in tiny enamel cups that were often chipped and worn. These cups became a symbol of life’s resilience, holding the sweetness of shared moments with family and friends.

The Many Stops on My Coffee Journey.

When I lived in Tobago, my mornings began with quiet beach walks, often with a cup of coffee in hand, while the evenings ended under the tamarind tree at Store Bay, watching breathtaking sunsets and listening to sweet reggae music in the background. Life was simple, yet profound.

Later, when I moved to New York, I often grabbed a quick deli coffee in Queens or Brooklyn before boarding the subway to wherever my construction work took me. Those moments were ordinary yet comforting, especially when paired with the vibrant melodies of Caribbean Street artists performing in subway stations.

Travel introduced me to a world of coffee traditions. I often reminisce of my first  espresso at Lago Maggiore in Italy; falling in love with cafes in France, Holland and Switzerland. Whether it was sharing a soul-warming cup in Bremen, Germany, with Corrina, a girl I had met in Grenada or sitting in a quiet backstreet cafe in Berlin, journaling, while waiting on Sylvia, my artist friend. Each encounter deepened my love for coffee—not just for its flavor but for the way it brings people together.

From strolling through Parisian cafés to discovering corner hideaways in San Francisco, Philadelphia and Miami; coffee became the backdrop to many adventures. Whether I was sipping caffè macchiato in Freiburg, exploring Amsterdam’s cobblestones, sitting quietly on the Piazza Navona in Rome or finding solace at the Ciao cafe in Tobago; coffee always connected me to the heart of every place.

A Desire for Simplicity.

No matter where I roamed or how busy life became, I always longed for the simplicity of home, the colors and smells of the Caribbean. I envisioned a café on the beach—a place where a cup of coffee could pause time, where life was measured not by the grind... but by moments of joy and connection.
